OUR STORY
Where it all began
“Animals deserve to be treated with respect and have the right to a dignified life.”— D. Miró
ALAAR's history is deeply connected to the life and determination of Maria Zulmira Marinho, our D. Miró, who was at the origin of the association.
It began in the early 2000s, when she decided to act in response to the reality of abandoned animals on the streets of Ponte de Lima. At a time when there were still few resources dedicated to animal protection, her initiative and persistence led to what would become ALAAR, formally established in 2002.
More than creating an association, D. Miró left behind a way of doing things: caring, protecting and leading by example. For more than two decades she dedicated a large part of her life to animals, helping rescue, treat and find families for thousands of dogs and cats.
She passed away in March 2024, but her legacy remains present in ALAAR's daily work, in every animal taken in, every volunteer who helps and every adoption that opens the door to a new life.
Today, ALAAR continues the path D. Miró began, caring for more than 130 dogs and 30 cats, with the support of volunteers, adopters, sponsors, members and friends of the animal cause.
Continuing this work also means continuing what she started: giving a voice to those who have none and fighting for a more dignified life for every animal.
